Here are the hair transplant questions most patients bring to us: Will it hurt? What will it cost? Why does my hair look worse at month two? Is it permanent? This guide answers them in plain language, with realistic timelines, so you can decide with confidence.
Quick answers
Cost: depends on grafts, technique and extent of loss. See our cost guide.
Pain: local anaesthesia; most patients report pressure, not pain.
Shedding: normal at 2–4 weeks.
Growth: starts around 4–6 months; full results at 9–12 months.
Are you a good candidate for a hair transplant?
A hair transplant moves follicles from a donor area, usually the back of the head, to thinning or bald areas. It works best for male pattern baldness, because donor follicles are genetically resistant to balding. Hair grows in natural groups of one to four hairs called follicular units, and modern techniques move these intact for a natural look.
You are more likely to be a good fit with stable, patterned loss and enough healthy donor hair. Poor donor supply, a tendency to form keloid scars, and hair loss caused by medication such as chemotherapy can make surgery unsuitable. Suitability is always decided after a scalp examination, and our guide to choosing a hair transplant clinic in Ghaziabad lists what to ask at that visit.
Age matters. If you are in your early twenties and still losing hair, a surgeon may advise waiting or starting hair loss treatment first, since ongoing loss can leave transplanted hair looking isolated.
FUE vs FUT: which technique is better?
| FUE (follicular unit extraction) | FUT (strip method) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Follicles are removed one by one with a small punch tool | A strip of scalp is removed and divided into grafts under magnification |
| Scarring | Tiny dot scars | A linear scar, usually hidden by hair |
| Best for | Short hairstyles, small to medium sessions | Large sessions in one day |
Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your hairstyle, donor supply and graft needs. Read our detailed FUE vs FUT comparison, and be cautious of any clinic that pushes a single method for everyone.
How much does a hair transplant cost?
The honest answer is "it depends," and a clinic that quotes without examining you is guessing. Your final price is driven by:
- Number of grafts needed to reach your goal. For a common example, see the cost of a 3,000-graft hair transplant.
- Technique and how much work the surgeon must do.
- Extent of hair loss and the design of your hairline.
- Aftercare included in the plan.
Comparing several clinics? Ask what a "graft" means in each quote and who performs each step. Our guides to affordable hair transplant options in Ghaziabad and hair transplant cost across Delhi NCR explain how pricing varies.
Does a hair transplant hurt?
Almost always, no. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, and patients commonly describe pressure and odd sensations, similar to dental work. The initial injections are the most uncomfortable part. Afterwards, mild soreness, tightness or swelling is normal and usually settles within a few days.
Recovery: the first 10 days
- Days 1–3: mild pain and swelling. Follow your wash instructions exactly.
- Days 4–5: swelling usually fades.
- Days 7–10: tiny scabs soften and fall off on their own. Don't pick them.
- Weeks 2–4: most routines resume, but check with your surgeon before intense exercise, swimming or alcohol.
Most people return to normal activity within about 10 days. Contact your clinic if bleeding continues or pain isn't controlled by the medication you were prescribed. For more on what to expect, read our guide to hair transplant results and recovery.
Hair transplant results timeline
| When | What's happening |
|---|---|
| Weeks 2–4 | Transplanted hairs shed ("shock loss"). Follicles stay in place. |
| Months 2–3 | Dormant phase; small pimples may appear as new hairs push up. |
| Months 4–6 | New, fine hair begins to show, often patchy at first. |
| Months 6–9 | Visible improvement; hair thickens and matures. |
| Months 9–12 | Full results for most patients. |
| Up to 18 months | Continued thickening in some cases. |
Why does my hair look worse at month 2 or 3?
The transplanted shafts have already shed and the new ones haven't emerged yet. This is a normal stage, not a failed transplant. Judging results before six months is the most common mistake patients make. You can see finished outcomes in our before-and-after gallery.
Risks and side effects
Serious complications are uncommon when a qualified surgeon performs the procedure, but you should know what to expect:
- Swelling, redness and scabbing (temporary)
- Numbness in the donor or recipient area (usually temporary)
- Small pimples or folliculitis as hairs emerge
- Visible donor scarring if too many grafts are taken or a strip is used
- An unnatural hairline design or poor graft survival
Most poor results trace back to over-harvesting the donor area, a badly designed hairline, or delegating work that a doctor should do.
How to choose a hair transplant clinic
- Who does what? Ask which steps the surgeon performs personally.
- Before-and-after photos of similar hair types, taken 12 months or more after surgery.
- A hairline plan suited to your age and future loss, not a copy of a celebrity's.
- An honest consultation. A good clinic will sometimes tell you to wait.
- Aftercare and follow-up in writing, with easy access to your surgeon.
Local clinic or travelling far? Many patients compare nearby clinics with options in other cities or countries. Whatever you choose, verify credentials and confirm who will operate on you. Remember that follow-up visits in the first year are much easier when your clinic is close to home.

Medication and non-surgical alternatives
A transplant doesn't stop your existing hair from thinning, so many surgeons combine surgery with medical treatment. Options people ask about include:
- Finasteride and minoxidil: commonly used to slow loss or thicken hair. Discuss side effects with a doctor first.
- PRP treatment: uses your own platelet-rich plasma to support hair growth, often used alongside other therapies.
- Hair regrowth therapy: a non-surgical route for early thinning.
- GFC treatment: a growth-factor approach used for hair thinning, including in women.
Not sure whether you need surgery? A consultation can tell you whether surgery or treatment is the better first step. If you also want fuller facial hair or brows, we offer beard transplant and eyebrow transplant as well.
Hair transplant FAQ
How long does a hair transplant take to grow?
New growth typically appears at 4–6 months, with full results around 9–12 months. Some patients keep thickening up to 18 months.
Is a hair transplant permanent?
Transplanted follicles come from areas resistant to pattern baldness, so they generally last. Your remaining native hair can still thin. Read more: is a hair transplant permanent?
How long does the procedure take?
Most sessions finish in a single day. Larger cases may need more time; your surgeon will plan this at consultation.
When can I go back to work?
Some patients return within days, but visible scabbing means many take up to a week off. Most resume normal activity in about 10 days.
Can a poor transplant be corrected?
Often, through a repair session or camouflage techniques. Donor hair is limited, so consult an experienced surgeon before a second procedure.
Can women have a hair transplant?
Yes, if thinning is localised and donor hair is sufficient. Diffuse thinning is often better treated with non-surgical options.
Bottom line
A hair transplant can deliver natural, lasting results, provided the timing, technique and surgeon are right and you give it a full year to mature. Start with a consultation, compare plans rather than prices, and don't judge the outcome before month six.
